Chinchero : CHINCHERO
Posted by cuscoguide on 2007/10/8 21:37:54 (201 reads)

It is a district in the Urubamba province, 30 Kms. (19 miles) away through the paved road, northwest from Qosqo. Its altitude is 3780 mts. (12400 feet), over a plateau that is cold during the early mornings and at night time. It was one of the most important Inkan towns in the region, where even today it is possible to see vestiges of its great past.
. The meaning of its original name is lost; although, today tradition knows it as the "land of the rainbow" because over here the K'uychi (rainbow) is frequently seen in the rainy season. As it is known the rainbow was a special deity among Inkas; it had a temple inside the Qosqo's Qorikancha, and still today in many regions of the Andes people respect, fear or even revere it. Alfonsina Barrionuevo, about the behavior of people in front of a rainbow says, "... It is not possible to watch the rainbow, they say superstitiously, without covering the mouth because it rots the teeth. Neither it is possible to point it with the finger because it undermines the bones. Maidens run away from it because if it catches them in the countryside, it has children with them".

pisaq : PISAQ
Posted by cuscoguide on 2007/10/8 20:32:32 (203 reads)

Just like all the cities in Cusco, Pisac is an important archaeological center that encompasses the mystical Incan constructions, in contrast to the natural richness of the Urubamba Valley.
Although it is very difficult to know the autochthonous names of Cusco's ancient cities, Pisac is one of the fewest examples of original names that are known. It derives from the Quechua word "pisaq" or "p'isaqa", which means partridge (a gallinacean type that abounds in this area). According to the traditional Incan architecture, the cities were built based on figurative designs of animals. Pisac was partridge-shaped, as we can tell from its name.

SOUTH VALLEY OF CUSCO : TIPON
Posted by cuscoguide on 2007/9/30 19:57:31 (195 reads)

It is a National Archaeological Park located to the east of the city of Cusco. It covers a territory of about 2200 acres. It is found in the district of Oropesa, province of Quispicanchis. To get to the main archaeological monument it is 5 km (3 miles). The road starts from the kilometer 18 (11.2 mile) of the road Cusco-Puno to the north and crossing the creek of the "Watanay".
Half kilometer out of the paved road we find the small town of Tipon. It is part of the village of Quispicanchis that used to be property of San Lorenzo de los Valles in (1650- 1802). Without doubt this was the most important monument of the colonial time but today it is completely abandoned.
